Summary of the Book: When Brian J. Hubbard, former member of the U.S. Disabled Ski Team, founded the Council for Independent Living, Inc., in 1989, he was astonished and pleased with the dramatic results. Nearly one hundred fifty disabled individuals were provided professional counseling, enabling them to not only maintain and improve their ability to live independently but also find, through realistic and positive attitudes, job training or employment. It was this experience which prompted Hubbard to share his story in From Emptiness to Empowerment: Changing Physical and Other Losses into Strengths, with the aim of providing those same benefits to people on a larger scale. Anyone who has ever experienced loss, be it physical or emotional, will find Hubbard's insightful overview into the grieving process both helpful and sensitive. He begins by examining the stages of pain and suffering one typically encounters following a disabling injury or loss and then explores the positive benefits of channeling anger and hurt into healthy outlets. Hubbard's attention to detail and thorough scope of knowledge contribute to the informative nature of his book, providing a series of tools, tips, and helpful strategies. From Emptiness to Empowerment: Changing Physical and Other Losses into Strengths will leave you more informed and at peace with the realization you are not alone. Somebody else understands.
