I am gladly writing these words for Brian J. Hubbard.
I have known Brian J. Hubbard for approximately twelve years, primarily in a professional capacity. As the past president of National Association of Social Workers (NASW) as well as being the Director of Clinical Social Work, Lifespan Academic Medical Center(formerly Rhode Island Hospital), I have worked with Mr. Hubbard relative to issues of mutual concern. I appointed Mr. Hubbard to serve as the Chairperson of the RI NASW Chapter's first Committee on Disabilities. In that role, he committed and dedicated himself to many hours of exploring and surveying the quantity and quality of services to the disabled. He became an extremely valuable advocate at the state and national level for improved services to the disabled. Capitalizing on his political contacts, he has also been a valuable legislative voice between NASW and influential members of Congress, such as US Senators Edward M. Kennedy and Claiborne Pell, to insure that clinical social workers be included as qualified providers of mental health services on legislation mandating health insurance for all employees in America. He also was a strong voice in advocating for the licensing of social workers in the State of RI which subsequently became a state law.
Mr. Hubbard is a pioneer and leader within the social work community, especially when it comes to the needs of the disabled and issues of adjustment to trauma. He is director of Counseling for Independent Living, Inc., the nation's first program to provide professional counseling to individuals with disabilities and chronic illnesses along with their families on a community-based, systematic level. I have strongly supported his efforts with several letters of support to acquire Federal funding. Mr. Hubbard is an exceptionally gifted social work clinician, administrator, consultant, lecturer and author. He has written, a book, From emptiness to Empowerment: Changing Physical and Other Losses Into Strengths, which has been published.
I highly recommend without reservation Mr. Hubbard's services.
